<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent increase of NO<SB>x</SB>amount emitted into the atmosphere. <P>SOLUTION: A control device for an internal combustion engine comprises: a means for detecting a bed temperature of a lean NO<SB>x</SB>catalyst 5; a means for detecting a NO<SB>x</SB>amount emitted from an engine (an engine emission NO<SB>x</SB>amount); a means for detecting NO<SB>x</SB>concentration in exhaust emitted from the engine (engine emission NO<SB>x</SB>concentration); a NO<SB>x</SB>emission amount calculating means for calculating a current NO<SB>x</SB>amount after passing through the lean NO<SB>x</SB>catalyst (tail pipe NO<SB>x</SB>emission amount), based on the engine exhaust NO<SB>x</SB>amount and the engine emission NO<SB>x</SB>concentration; a means for setting target values of the tail pipe NO<SB>x</SB>emission amounts (target NO<SB>x</SB>emission amounts) for each operating point based on each target value of the bed temperature, engine emission NO<SB>x</SB>amount, and NO<SB>x</SB>concentration; and an operating point changing means. The operating point is changed to make the current tail pipe NO<SB>x</SB>emission amount smaller than the target NO<SB>x</SB>emission amount, by changing at least one of the bed temperature, engine emission NO<SB>x</SB>amount, and NO<SB>x</SB>concentration is changed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
