<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that multivalue recording of two or more bits in each layer is not achieved yet although the conventional recording layer is multilayer, and there is a limit in increasing recording density, and to provide a recording medium achieving the multivalue recording of two or more bits in each recording layer. <P>SOLUTION: In the multilayer multivalue recording type optical recording medium, a set of multilayer recording layers are constituted of an optical phase change recording material allowing the multivalue recording of two or more bits according to differences in reflectance or transmittance; a reflective layer, a heat diffusion adjustment layer, a filter layer, a polarizing layer, or a protective layer for reducing laser intensity reaching deeper layers and controlling atomic diffusion or heat conduction is provided between respective recording layers.
