PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat engine capable of effectively recovering work by expansion of working fluid, reusing it and extending life of a piston of a pulse pipe expander. SOLUTION: The heat engine of this invention consists of a compressor with a high pressure end and a low pressure end, a heat radiator, a heat sink and the pulse pipe expander with a first high pressure passage and a first low pressure passage and has a closed circuit in which the working fluid is enclosed. The pulse pipe expander has a flow passage switch means for switching opening/closing of the first high pressure passage and opening/closing of the first low pressure passage, a pulse pipe for generating a low temperature by expanding the working fluid wherein an end is connected with the first high pressure passage and a first low pressure passage and an output device connected to the pulse pipe and driven by pressure variation of the working fluid in the pulse pipe. Thus, the work by gas expansion can be recovered and a lower end part of the piston which is a structuring element of the pulse pipe expander can be protected from shock of liquid.
