PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible, when malfunction has occurred at the start of an engine, to detect distinctively whether the cause of the malfunction depends upon battery drain or upon a malfunction occurrence of the starting system. SOLUTION: A malfunction detector is provided with a measurement means which is arranged in a connection circuit for connecting a battery and the starting system to measure an output voltage and output current of the battery, and a resistance value calculation means which obtains an output voltage (Vst) and output current (Ist) of the battery at the time of a maximum voltage drop of the battery at the start of the engine to calculate a resistance value (Rs) of the starting system from the output voltage and current values of the battery. When the resistance value, calculated by the resistance value calculation means, has been found to be off in comparison with a resistance value which is preliminarily memorized and is the resistance value in a normal range of the starting system, the starting system is detected to be out of order.
