PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition satisfying a multiple number of characteristics such as a high upper limit temperature of a nematic phase, a low lower limit temperature of a nematic phase, low viscosity, suitable and also large optical anisotropy, suitable dielectric constant anisotropy, large specific resistance, high stability against ultraviolet light and heat, etc. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition is provided by containing a compound expressed by formula (1) [wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl; and Y<SP>1</SP>is F] and a specific compound, and having a nematic phase.
