It is possible to achieve a high color reproducibility as a whole image without deteriorating the brightness of the entire image. A color image display device is formed by combining an optical shutter, a color filter having at least three-color elements, i.e., red, green, and blue corresponding to the optical shutter, and a backlight for transmitted illumination. A light source used for the backlight is formed by combining a blue or dark blue LED and a fluorescent body. The relationship between the NTSC ratio (W) as a color reproduction range of the color image display element and the light use efficiency (Y) is expressed as follows: Y = -0.38W + 51 (wherein W = 87).
