[PROBLEMS] To provide an apparatus for heating a food by using an exothermic element whereby a quick and stable exothermic reaction can be conducted. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] An exothermic element (1) is composed of a bag (10) and an exothermic agent (20), which comprises an aluminum powder, a hydrated lime powder and a burnt lime powder, enclosed in the bag (10). The bag (10) is made of a packing material having a base fabric, which is composed of a nonwoven fabric (11) and a waterproof layer (13) and has a number of pinholes (15), and has a water permeation speed of 13 to 81 ml/min/cm<SUP>2</SUP> in the case where the water head is 27 cm. Owing to this structure, favorable levels of the rising in temperature of the material to be heated, the elevated temperature and the duration time of the elevated temperature can be achieved under the conditions that are seemingly standard in heating a food.
