PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an organic electroluminescent element material that controls an emission wavelength, exhibits a high luminous efficiency and has a long emission lifetime, an organic electroluminescent element using the same, a lighting apparatus and a display. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element material is a metal complex represented by general formula (1) (Z is a hydrocarbon ring or a heterocyclic ring in which a substituent having a steric parameter value (Es value) of≤-0.5 is bonded to at least one of third atoms counted from the bonded nitrogen atom).
