PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering wheel retracting device as an accessory for retracting the steering wheel of an automobile or/and moving the steering wheel away from a driver in a collision of the automobile with other object and a collision of other object with the automobile. SOLUTION: The steering wheel retracting device is provided with the steering wheel of the automobile and a moving mechanism for moving the steering wheel away from the driver in an automobile collision. A cylinder housing is attached to the automobile. A shaft is inserted through the cylinder housing for connecting the steering wheel to front wheels of the automobile. A piston rod is movably mounted on the shaft. A piston is connected to the piston rod, and movably arranged in the cylinder housing. An actuator is connected to the cylinder housing for selectively moving the piston in relation to the cylinder housing to move the steering wheel away from the driver. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
