A chuck comprises jaws 72 which move along guideways on the chuck body towards the axis but in a direction at an angle thereto. The jaws are operated by a draw-bar 99 having inclined guideways in a head 94. The chuck body is made of two mating parts, some of the corresponding surfaces (such as 26, 36) having clearance between them to reduce machining time. The jaws 71, Fig. 7 (not shown), have grooves 76 and are lubricated in their ways through passages 66. The forward end of each jaw engages a body surface 56. The front surface of each jaw may be grooved and tapped for the attachment of work holding dogs J. In their innermost positions the jaws contact each other on bevels 91. A plug 53 prevents ingress of dirt and allows access to a bolt 99 which is secured to the head 94 by a nut 101 and attaches the head to a main draw-bar. (Alternatively, a draw-bar screws directly into the head 94). The chuck is mounted on a flange by means of bolts passing through passages (111) and by screws (109).</p> |
