A photographing apparatus is provided to set a time difference variably between preliminary flashing and main flashing, thereby detecting an appropriate amount of exposure light during the primarily flash. Photoelectric conversion elements are arranged in a matrix type, wherein the photoelectric conversion elements accumulate charges due to exposure to light. An accumulation charge reading unit reads the accumulation charges by a time difference based on the position of each row or column of the matrix. A reset unit simultaneously reset the accumulation charges of all of the photoelectric conversion elements before main exposure. A reset timing changing unit changes the reset timing for resetting the accumulation charges with respect to a synchronization pulse corresponding to a time for reading the accumulation charges.
