PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vibration damping device capable of performing effective vibration control without wasting energy required for vibration control. SOLUTION: This vibration damping device is for actively damping the vibration of a vibration generation source by exciting the vibration generation source. The device includes a vibration condition detecting means for detecting the vibration condition of the vibration generation source, a magnetic pole, a coil provided to link magnetic fluxes formed by the magnetic pole, and a control means electrically connected to the coil. The vibration damping device is equipped with a vibration exciter for exciting the vibration generation source by relatively vibrating the coil and the magnetic pole by controlling the electrified state of the coil. The control means is constituted to switch between an excitation mode for exciting the vibration generation source and damping the vibration of the vibration generation source, and a regenerative mode for making a regenerative current flow based on electromotive force generated in the coil by vibration of the vibration generation source into a regenerative resistance, based on the vibration condition.
