PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for discriminating a printer ink ribbon which is used even when there are many types of ink ribbons, and does not require the arrangement of an identification mark on an ink ribbon surface. SOLUTION: The apparatus for discriminating a printer ink ribbon comprises: a 1st sensor that detects identification information displayed on one end side of a supply bobbin 3 when a printer is loaded with the supply bobbin or an ink ribbon cassette 5 holding the ink ribbon, wherein the supply bobbin displays the identification information corresponding to the type of an ink ribbon 32 using both ends of a winding shaft 31 of the ink ribbon; a 2nd sensor that detects the identification information displayed on the other end side of the supply bobbin; and a discriminating means that discriminates the type of the wound ink ribbon, based on the detection results by the 1st and 2nd sensors.
