PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide optical encoder which can be manufactured with few parts and simple procedure. SOLUTION: The encoder is a reflective optical encoding apparatus for detecting location and/or movement of mechanical device, which includes an encoding medium containing at least one reflective portion and an encoder housing into which light source and photodetective sensor are incorporated. The encoder housing is arranged in the vicinity of the above encoding medium so that effective light path may be established from the above light source to the above photodetective sensor through the above at least one reflective portion of the encoding medium. In the encoding apparatus, the above encoder housing has a first flat facet located between the light source and the encoding medium, this first flat facet is designed to be at a first angle with common geometric plane so that light transmitted from the light source to the encoding medium may be refracted along a first slope light path to hit a desired position of the above encoding medium.
