PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting or gripping attachment for a shovel type excavator, which can omit a hydraulic cylinder and a hydraulic pipe specially for opening/closing operation, is simple in structure, low in production cost, and eliminates the problems wherein cutting or gripping work of the attachment is hindered due to the presence of the hydraulic pipe as an obstruction, the service life of the attachment is degraded due to failure of the hydraulic pipe, and the maintenance frequency of the hydraulic pipe is increased. SOLUTION: According to the structure of the cutting or gripping attachment for the shovel type excavator, a proximal end of a fixture support section 10A is connected to and supported by a distal end of an arm 2 of a boom section 1, and a pair of opening/closing arms 11, 12 provided for an opening/closing section 10B are connected to a distal end of the fixture support portion 10A in a manner openable along an almost horizontal plane. Then a link member 7 at a distal end of an expansion rod 6 and an upper surface side of the opening/closing arms 11, 12 are connected together by an opening/closing operating section 10C, and a linear motion of the expansion rod 6 is converted into a swingable rotating motion via two swingable opening/closing rods 22, 23 arranged on the opening/closing operating section 10C, to thereby transmit the converted swingable rotating motion to a horizontal opening/closing force to the opening/closing arms 11, 12.
