In a filler comprising a tank 17, a primary bed 23 of fine grain sand (No. 30) overlying a secondary bed 24 of coarser sand, a distributer 39 for the liquid to be filtered is a hollow body having an inlet 43, a wall 41 opposite the top surface of the sand on which well the liquid impinges and a number of ports 47 with a combined area greater than that of the inlet. Eight perforated collector tubes in bed 24 screen and collect the filtrate and pass it to the outlet pipe 10. In inches, the clearance between the inlet 43 and the wall 41 is 7-14% of the combined area of the ports 47 measured in square inches. A bleeder line 48 serves to remove trapped air when the filter is started. A valve V interconnects the pump line 11, the influent conduit 9, the effluent conduit 10 and external lines not shown for the filtering and backwashing cycles. |
