PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproduction discrete type magnetic head in which a reading blur and an output fluctuation at a reproduction track edge are small and which can reduce instability of reproduction output caused by repetition of recording operation. SOLUTION: Electric resistance of a magnetoresistance effect element of about 51Ωcan be achieved when an MR height is made same dimension with a track width by making an electrode into a two-step structure and using an Rh film of a thickness of about 20 nm for a first electrode layer 5, and an Au film of about 100 nm of film thicknesses for a second electrode layer 6. Since an undersurface of an upper magnetic shield 8 is prepared following irregularities of a level difference produced by the magnetoresistance effect element 3, a magnetic domain control layer 4, a first electrode layer 5 and a second electrode layer 6, a distance between a lower magnetic shield 1 and an upper magnetic shield 8 can be adjusted and an undersurface of the upper magnetic shield 8 can be made into adequate shape by changing the film thickness of the first electrode layer 5 and the second electrode layer 6 and spacing of the second electrode layer 6.
