PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a can coating composition for forming a coating film having excellent bending workability, water whitening resistance and flavor properties. SOLUTION: The water-based coating composition comprises 100 parts by mass of an acrylic resin-modified epoxy resin (A), 0.1-20 parts by mass of a resol-type phenol resin (B) and 0.1-20 parts by mass of an acrylic resin (C) having the following characteristics and an acid value of 100-500 mgKOH/g in which the resin (A) and the resin (C) are stably dispersed into an aqueous medium. The acrylic resin (C) comprises a vinyl copolymer chain (1) composed of an acid group-containing radically polymerizable monomer as a monomer component, as an essential component and a vinyl copolymer chain (2) composed of a carboxy group-containing radically polymerizable monomer as a monomer component, as an essential component.
