A single-phase induction motor drive the compressor of a refrigerator and has main and auxiliary stator windings 58a, 58b. The auxiliary winding poles are at 45 degrees with the main winding poles, the auxiliary windings having the higher impedance. Initially, both stator windings are energized directly through contacts 106, 108. After a short period, however, resistance-wire 100 expands to break contact 108 whereby capacitor 110 is connected in series with winding 58b. If there is an overload, contact 106 opens to disconnect the motor. A timer motor 90 periodically opens contact 92a to de-energize fan motor 96 and the compressor motor, and energize heating-coil 95 associated with the evaporator. The operation of the heating-coil continues until defrost thermostat 97 opens the circuit. Afterwards, the timer motor restores the circuit to its initial condition. The fan motor 96 circulates air over the evaporator provided that the timer contacts 92a are closed, the refrigerator door is closed, and the cabinet-temperature is not too low. The compressor motor has a fan with radial flow vanes which are cast as part of the rotor, and axial flow vanes which are formed from a sheet metal disc attached to the ends of the radial flow vanes.</p>
