PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize and increase accuracy of estimation of a motion (velocity) vector of a moving object from an image having luminance variation. SOLUTION: A transfer vector detecting device 10 derives a luminance variation equation from an equation including a luminance variation quantity as an autoregressive model or polynomial regression model and derives an objective function from the luminance variation equation, a divergence equation relating to divergence, and a vorticity equation relating to vorticity. Then light-shade values of two gray scale images which are low in spatial resolution among gray scale images for two successive images are substituted in the objective function and the calculation is repeated until an error in the divergence of the objective function and an error in vorticity converge to thereby temporarily estimate a velocity vector of the moving object. Then the velocity vector and light-shade values of two gray scale images which are higher in spatial resolution next are substituted in the objective function and the calculation is repeated until an error in the divergence of the objective function and an error in the vorticity converge to thereby estimate the velocity vector of the moving object.
