PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a multilayer coating film excellent in a finished property and such coating workability that an abnormally-coated surface such as a boil is not formed, in which water-based base coat paint and water-based clear coat paint are applied by a wet-on-wet method and the applied water-based base coat paint and water-based clear coat paint are heated to heat/harden both of coating films simultaneously. SOLUTION: The method for forming the multilayer coating film comprises the steps of: applying the water-based colored base coat paint to the object to be coated to form a base coat coating film; applying the water-based clear coat paint onto the unhardened base coat coating film; and heating/hardening the base coat coating film and a clear coat coating film simultaneously. When the water-based clear coat paint is applied, the solid concentration of the base coat coating film is≥85 mass% and the water absorptivity of the base coat coating film at 20°C is≤10 mass%.
