It is intended to provide a novel polyvinyl alcohol resin which is excellent in viscosity stability of an aqueous solution, high speed coatability, reactivity with a cross-linking agent and water solubility. The invention relates to the polyvinyl alcohol resin containing a structural unit having as a side chain a carboxyl group-containing long-chain alkyl group represented by the general formula (1). (1) (In the formula, R<SUP>1</SUP> and R<SUP>2</SUP> independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R<SUP>4</SUP>, R<SUP>5</SUP> and R<SUP>6</SUP> independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R<SUP>3</SUP> represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or an alkali metal and n represent a positive integer.)
