PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyolefin excellent in impact strength, long term characteristics, chlorine water resistance, elution resistance and molding processability, having high activity in a multiple stage polymerization even in the case of contaminating the olefin with an oxygen-containing compound or a sulfur-containing compound. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyolefin by performing the multiple stage polymerization of anα-olefin is provided with that the multiple stage polymerization comprises at least a polymerization for producing a low molecular weight component and a high molecular weight component, where a hydrogen concentration in a polymerization vessel on producing the low molecular weight component in the multiple stage polymerization is≥40 and≤90 mol%, an average retention time in the low molecular weight component production in the multiple stage polymerization is≥1.5 to≤10 hr, a catalyst used in the polymerization consists of [A] a specific solid catalyst and [B] a specific organoaluminum compound, and the organoaluminum compound [B] is added to the polymerization vessel in each of stages of the multiple stage polymerization.
