PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single crystal ingot that has no propagation of thermal dislocation and no crack and that is safe for handling, and to provide a method for manufacturing the ingot. SOLUTION: The single crystal ingot has a body part 4 having a fixed diameter D<SB>2</SB>and a tail part 15 in an end side in the growth direction of the body part 4, wherein the tail part 15 includes a tapered part 16 where the diameter decreases from the body part 4 to the end and an end part 17 in the end side of the tapered part 16, the end part 17 having a diameter larger than the minimum diameter D<SB>1</SB>of the tapered part 16 and smaller than the diameter D<SB>2</SB>of the body part 4.
