A membrane element and a membrane unit in which a space section surrounded by a frame can be provided easily above the membrane element regardless of the number of sheets of the membrane element. In the membrane element where separation membranes are arranged on the opposite sides of a supporting plate, spacer portions for keeping a predetermined interval between the membrane surfaces of adjoining membrane elements are provided at the opposite side portions of the membrane element, and the spacer portion has a hole for inserting a through bolt. A plurality of sheets of membrane element extending above the upper end of the supporting plate are arranged such that the spacers contact each other, sealing panels are arranged at the opposite outermost portions of the arranged membrane elements, and a frame surrounding the space above the separation membrane is formed of the spacer portions and the sealing panel to complete a membrane unit.
