The system has a particulate filter (PF) e.g. wall monolith particulate trap, that filters particulates from an exhaust. An upstream end of the PF receives the exhaust from a diesel engine. A grid, which is made of an electrically resistive material, is applied to an exterior upstream surface of the PF. The grid selectively heats the exhaust to initiate combustion of particulates within the PF. The particulate filter includes a conductive coating that is applied to the exterior upstream surface of the PF. An independent claim is also included for regenerating a particulate filter (PF) of an exhaust system.
