The method involves determining the number of lanes in the direction of travel by driver assistance systems and vehicle security systems (10). The speed and a position of the vehicles traveling in the direction of travel by means of a surrounding sensing system (20) are determined. The vehicle data using control means (30) located in the vehicle are permanently determined. The information about possible vehicles (40), which are located in the surroundings and adversely affect the flow of traffic are sensed and evaluated.
