The controller has a cam shaft (4) with an opener cam (5) that operates a lift valve under interconnection of an opener cam follower (8) supported in an internal combustion engine (2) in an opening direction. A closer cam (6) of the shaft operates the valve under interconnection of a rocker arm in a closing direction. An attachment (10) is arranged between the follower and the valve. The attachment is coupled with the follower in a relative position opposite to the follower by a switching unit and stays in connection with a small stroke cam formed at the shaft.
