The invention generally relates to a top drive arrangement for connecting tubulars. The method of connecting includes operating a top drive (100, fig 7), thereby rotating a first threaded tubular member relative to a second threaded tubular member; measuring a torque exerted on the first tubular member by the top drive (100, fig 7), wherein the torque is measured using a torque shaft 610 rotationally coupled to the top drive (100, fig 7) and the first tubular, the torque shaft 610 having a strain gage disposed thereon; wirelessly transmitting the measured torque from the torque shaft 610 to a stationary interface; measuring rotation of the first tubular member; determining acceptability of the threaded connection; and stopping rotation of the first threaded member when the threaded connection is complete or if the threaded connection is unacceptable. The two threaded members may define a shoulder and a shoulder condition may be detected during rotation and the threaded connection is complete when reaching a predetermined rotation value from the shoulder condition. Alternatively torque can be measured by using upper and lower turn counters (905a, 905b, fig 9). |
