A tool-rest comprises body members 22, 28 between which a cutter-block B is held by a clamp 58 which is applied by a spring 68 and released by a piston 50. A pair of clamps 58 are housed in the member 28 and engage the ends 56 of piston-rods 52 which pass through openings B5 in the block B. A plate 74, fixed to the bottom of the rest, has passages 88, 90 through which pressure fluid is fed beneath the pistons, and further plates 69 at the top of the rest retain the springs 68. Spacing strips 32, 34 are disposed between members 22, 28 and serve to locate the back B<SP>1</SP> of the block B and a projection B2 on the end of the block. The rest is attached to the lathe by a dovetail groove with an adjustable jib 38, the cutter-block being replaceable without removing the rest. In a modification (not shown), the clamp and the release piston may be on the same side of the cutter-block. |
