A tray handler and a method are provided to allow an advanced and a variety of tray designs to be clamped with a clamp design gimbaled to the tray handler, and an actuator plate actuated by using a single air cylinder, and enable opening and closing of a clamp assembly with a movement of the actuator plate. A tray handler(H) for stacking and de-stacking an ophthalmic prescription tray comprises a plurality of isolated clamp assemblies(22,24,28,30), a lift plate(54), a first actuator, a second operator, and a controller. The plurality of isolated clamp assemblies defines a stack area along a conveyor. The lift plate is operably placed within the stack area. The first actuator is operably assembled to the clamp assembly, wherein the clamp assembly is capable of moving inwards and outwards to the lift plate by the actuation of the first actuator. The second actuator is operably assembled to the lift plate, wherein the lift plate is capable of performing vertical movement in the stack area by the actuation of the second actuator. The controller makes communication with the first and second actuators to control their actuations.
