The method involves arranging a scale (6) to be formed in a given distance and given angle to a surface (2) to be examined. The scale providing numbers describing distance of lines is projected, where the scale is projected on a scale 1:1. The scale in a preset full scale is projected on the surface as a line pattern and/or grid pattern. Irregularities recognized in the surface are quantified on the basis of a projected scale (6`), where the projected scale is figuratively held. An independent claim is also included for a device for size determination of deformation of a painted surface of a motor vehicle.
