A process for production of an olefin oxide comprising the step of contacting an olefin and oxygen with a silver catalyst which can be produced by contacting metal silver or a silver compound or a mixture thereof with an alkaline earth metal carbonate and which has an alkaline metal content of 1500 ppm or less based on the total weight of the silver catalyst.
