The reference surface extends in a circumferential direction of the rotation body partially outside of and within a sheet format, so that the surface is partially covered by a sheet (7) which is transported. A reflection sensor (5) is activatable for a period of passage of the reference surface by a measuring field of the sensor. The rotation body has a circumferential surface that carries the sheet. An independent claim is also included for a method for sheet detection using an sheet controlling device.
