APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR RESELCETING CELL IN PORTABLE TERMINAL

A cell reselection method in a mobile terminal and an apparatus for the same are provided to reduce remarkably a ping-pong state between a GSM(Global System for Mobile communication) cell and a WCDMA(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) cell by granting additional weights to cell reselection judgement conditions in a dual mode terminal and limiting cell reselection from a GSM cell to a WCDMA cell. In case a mobile terminal moves from a WCDMA cell to a GSM cell, the mobile terminal activates a timer(301,303). The mobile terminal checks whether the received signal level of the GSM cell is out of the range of a preset level(305). If so, the mobile terminal analyzes system information, received from the network, and checks whether WCDMA cells exist in the present area(307). If so, the mobile terminal receives signals from the WCDMA cells of the present area and measures parameters to judge cell reselection(309). Then the mobile terminal compares the RSSI of the GSM cell with a preset critical value(311). If the RSSI of the GSM cell is smaller than the critical value, the mobile terminal sets the values of FDD_Qecno and FDD_Qrscp, weights additionally granted to cell reselection conditions, to '0'(327). Then the mobile terminal confirms whether a specific WCDMA cell meets cell reselection conditions(319). In case the WCDMA cell meets the cell reselection conditions, the mobile terminal brings the timer to an end, reselects the WCDMA cell, and moves to the WCDMA cell from the GSM cell(321,323).
