A multiple port valve comprises a housing with three co-planar ports (18), an axial port (22) located opposite to the actuating spindle, and a generally L-ported ball which has three preset rotation positions. A fifth port (20) connects into the ball cavity and thence into any one of the co-planar ports (18) depending on ball rotation position. A multiple port valve comprises a housing (4), a ball unit (6) with three preset rotation positions, two link ports (20,22), at least three co-planar selection ports (18,18,18), and two independent flow ducts (25, 26) which provide routes making use of the ball cavity free space (32) and/or run through the ball, - so that a first link port (20) is connectable by a first duct (25) with at least one of the selection ports (18), such that in each rotation position a different selection port (18) can be connected to the link port (20) via the duct (25) and , - so that the second link port (22), at the preset ball-rotation positions is connectable by a second duct (26) with either of the selection ports (18) which are not in use with the first duct (25). Independent claims are included for use of the valve in a triple cartridge water softening unit and, for a regeneratable water softening unit which comprises at least three cartridges, and a multiple port valve where the co-planar selection ports (18) are connected to the three cartridge discharge outlets, and the link connection ports (20,22) are connected to external services. |
