The method involves recognizing that a portable device e.g. computer host (130) such as mainframe computer, is connected with a computer system (100). An operating interface e.g. IEEE 1284 connection, is displayed in order to select a function from multiple functions. Another recognition is made that the function is selected by the operating interface. A software-module is configured in order to activate the function, where the computer system is instructed to use the portable device as an external electronic device corresponding to the function. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device comprising a connecting device and a display unit (2) a system for selectively activating a function of a portable device.
