The method involves supplying a control signal to an electrical stepper motor. A blocking condition of the stepper motor is determined during supplying of the stepper motor with the control signal. The determination of the blocking condition is activated only after a free run of the stepper motor for a predetermined period is sensed in advance. The stepper motor is controlled in a half-stepping operation, where the stepper motor has two coils that are electrically separated from each other. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device for operating an electrical stepper motor (2) a headlight assembly for a motor vehicle.
