PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate controlling of a driving mechanism lifting and lowering a roller means feeding a sheet between an operation position and a retreating position with a simple structure. SOLUTION: The paper feeding device is provided with a stacking guide for supporting the sheet, a feed roller means for feeding the sheet on the stacking guide to the downstream side, a lifting arm member supporting the feed roller means between the operation position fitted to the sheet on the stacking guide and the retreating position separated from the sheet in such a manner of freely rocking, and a driving means for rotating and driving the feed roller means. The paper feeding device is further provided with a drive rotating shaft having a drive gear connected to the driving means, and an intermediate rotating shaft arranged to be separated from the driving rotating shaft and having an intermediate gear. First and second transmission gears are attached on the drive rotating shaft in such a manner of freely rocking so as to roll on an outer periphery of the drive gear. The lifting arm member is journaled to the intermediate rotating shaft in such a manner of freely rocking through a friction transmission means, and the feed roller means transmits driving from the intermediate gear through the transmitting means.
