997,542. Making beams; welding by fusion. BRODERNA HEDLUND A.B. Oct. 4, 1963 [Oct. 10, 1962], No. 39213/63. Headings B3A and B3R. Beams are made by welding flanges 2 to a web while simultaneously heating the web intermediate the flanges 2 to reduce distortion of the web. Flanges 2 are welded to the web 1 by moving the flanges and web past stationary submerged arc welding heads while heating the web by burners 6 slightly in advance of the welding heads. The heating of the web 1 may be effected by submerged arc welding longitudinal strips 7 to one or both sides of the web 1 simultaneously with the welding of the flanges 2. The web 1 may be secured to each flange 2 by double fillet welds. To prevent distortion of the flanges 1 during welding, a source of heat may be applied to the edge of the flange. |
