<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for preventing loss of game data. <P>SOLUTION: This game machine 10 includes a CPU 40, wherein when a game cartridge 32 is mounted on the game machine 10, the CPU 40 is electrically connected to a flash memory 58 having ROM 56 and two backup areas in the game cartridge 32. The game data generated according to the progress of a game is saved (updated) in a work memory 44, and for example, according to user's designation, the latest game data is written to the backup area. When the latest game data is written, the CPU 40 selects the backup area storing the game data whose write time is older as the backup area to write the game data.
