PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus and an image display method for preventing reduction in contrast. SOLUTION: The image display method includes a first step for moving black particles 10A from among all pixels to the side of a surface substrate 3 and moving white particles 10B to the side of a rear substrate 4 and a second step for moving black particles 10A only in pixels for displaying a white image to the side of the rear substrate 4 and moving white particles 10B to the side of the surface substrate 3.
