PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system having a sufficient correction function for image blur or the like with a compacter and simpler constitution, and achieving excellent optical performance. SOLUTION: The variable power optical system is equipped with a first positive lens group G1, a second negative lens group G2, a fifth positive lens group G5, a third positive lens group G3 and a fourth negative lens group G4 including first to third sub lens groups G41 to G43 in order from an object side. Magnification is performed by moving the second lens group G2. The correction of the fluctuation of an image surface caused by the magnification and focusing are performed by moving the third lens group G3. The fourth lens group G4 is fixed in the magnification and focusing. The image blur is corrected by moving only the second sub lens group G42 in a direction perpendicular to an optical axis Z1. Thus, the very excellent image blur correction function is achieved, and the simple and compact constitution is obtained as a whole. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
