<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical information reader capable of appropriately reading optical information when a carrier to which the optical information is attached is held up. <P>SOLUTION: A QR code Q attached to a cellular phone 90 inserted between a window 54 and a background plate 50 having a background pattern 52 with contrast is read by a light receiving sensor 23. At this time, an image for which the background pattern 52 is imaged by the light receiving sensor 23 is fetched, the position and speed of the cellular phone 90 are detected on the basis of the change of the contrast image of the background pattern 52 generated by being intercepted by the cellular phone 90, and a photographing condition is set from the detected position and speed.
