摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently operate an apparatus for controlling a variable valve system, such as a VVT (Variable Valve Timing) mechanism. SOLUTION: When an engine 200 is stopped, a vane 219 is locked to a most delayed angular position by means of a lock pin 224 in a VVT controller 216. When the engine 200 has started, an ECU 100 executes a suction valve timing control process, and calculates an accumulated value "enesum" of the rotational speed Ne of the engine after the start of the engine at a prescribed cycle. When the accumulated value "enesum" is not smaller than a reference value "t_neoilpr" to be acquired from a reference value map MP1 according to a cooling water temperature Tw, the ECU 100 judges that the pressure of oil concerning the VVT controller 216 has reached the releasing oil pressure capable of releasing the locking state of the vane 219 by the lock pin 224, and releases a forced most delayed angle mode for forcedly keeping the most delayed angular position of the vane 219, and starts an ordinary control operation for the suction valve timing based on a target displacement angle.
