Disclosed is an electrode catalyst for fuel cells having high cell output and high fuel efficiency, wherein activation of a catalyst, which is composed of an alloy of platinum and cobalt, is improved. Also disclosed is a method for producing such an electrode catalyst. Specifically disclosed is an electrode catalyst for fuel cells wherein catalyst particles composed of platinum and cobalt are loaded on a conductive carrier. This electrode catalyst is characterized in that the catalyst particles have a composition (molar) ratio of platinum:cobalt = 3:1-5:1. A high cell voltage can be obtained when the ratio of platinum to cobalt is within the range from 3:1 to 5:1. When the ratio of platinum to cobalt is less than 3:1, the amount of cobalt dissolved from the catalyst is increased. When the ratio of platinum to cobalt is more than 5:1, the catalyst activity is decreased. |
