<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately measure the distance to an object, based on a parallax while variably setting an area for extracting the object from photographed images of two imaging devices. <P>SOLUTION: An object extraction area for extracting an object is set in each of photographed images of two imaging devices 2R and 2L. Positional data on a reference picture area in each of the photographed images and the reference parameter for defining the relation between a parallax on the object and a distance in the image area are previously stored/held in a storage means. A parameter for defining the relation between the parallax of the object and the distance in the set extraction area are determined, based on the positional relation between the object extraction area in each of the imaging pictures and the reference image area and on the reference parameter.
