PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable resistor which can prevent the tip end of a screw driver for rotary adjustment from intruding into the underside of a screw driver plate and can prevent the screw driver plate from being lifted or deformed. SOLUTION: The variable resistor comprises an insulating substrate 1 having a resistance material 5 provided thereon and a sliding member 6 rotatably mounted to the substrate 1. The sliding member 6 is made up of a cup-shaped cylinder 6e having a contact 6g and a screw driver plate 6a folded from the cylinder 6e. A periphery 7 of an engagement groove 6b is provided close to the inner walls of a recess 6h provided in the upper part of the cup-shaped cylinder 6e by drawing or folding operation. In other words, the tip end of the periphery 7 of the engagement groove 6b is bent as far as a position nearly the same as the position of the tip end of the inserted screw driver or as far as a position lower than the screw driver tip end position.
