PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact high-variable power zoom lens constituted of two groups. SOLUTION: The zoom lens system 10 is constituted of two groups, that is, negative and positive groups in order from a screen 9. The first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 each include at least one aspherical surface. An air gap dw between the first lens group and the second lens group at a wide angle end, an air gap dt between the first lens group and the second lens group at a telephoto end, the composite focal length f1 of the first lens group, the composite focal length f2 of the second lens group and the composite focal length fw of the zoom lens system 10 at the wide angle end satisfy following conditions: 0.05<dt/dw<0.17, dt<2.5, 1.3<¾f1/fw¾<1.6, and 1.1<¾f2/f1¾<1.4.
