The engine has an adjustment device (9) provided between a cylinder head (8) and a crank case (6), and inlet and exhaust valves. A adjustment unit (14) and the adjustment device (9) are provided for adjusting the valve stroke of the valves simultaneously with the change of a geometrical compression ratio, so that the maximum valve stroke and the opening- and/or closing time of the valves are changeable with the change of the ratio by a change of position of the cylinder head in relation to the crank case.
